BRAND STRATEGY, BRAND IDENTITY, PACKAGING SYSTEM, PRINT COLLATERAL
Blindtiger has worked alongside Black Raven since the brewery's inception in 2009. Their packaging has always been full of rich storytelling that helped them stand out within the region. My first introduction to working with the brand was when they were selected to make the official 2022 Seattle Beer Week beer. Black Raven was excited to use the beer as an opportunity to put out a bold, new look. The release also fell on the 13th year of Beer Week, as well as Black Raven's 13th anniversary. With this in mind, I developed the can art, as well as various promotional materials. The resulting can design received the 2023 Global award for Best 16oz Can Design at the Craft Beer Marketing Awards.
Black Raven Brewing
After the success of Black Raven's Beer Week release, Blindtiger began the larger task of a brand and packaging refresh. Like many well-established breweries, Black Raven was ready to modernize and evolve to respond to changing market needs. Tackling a refresh for a well-established (and well liked) brand was admittedly daunting. Using the artwork from Beer Week as a starting point, I developed a brand system that's cleaner and more adaptable to the brewery's various needs. In addition to custom typography, I created a new look for their iconic raven mascot, which was later carried over into their core lineup redesign.
Brand + Packaging Refresh
Packaging updates were focused on streamlining the hierarchy of information on the can, as well as removing some of the rigidness of the previous design. Outside of the core cans, I was able to introduce playfullness and variety in art themes and styles for their other beer series. These brand and packaging updates have contributed to continuous growth in sales for the brewery. The core beer redesign was also an American Graphic Design Awards winner in the packaging category.
